Okay, but we used to do things the right way at Georgia Tech.

That's simply because the NCAA has gotten really anal about these sorts of things. There were less rules to break back then.

i'm not sure he's done for. but, the higher-ups didn't leave a good taste in the mouth of the NCAA investigators.

from what i've read, D-rad and compliance director broke the faith concerning the investigation. they shared information with CPJ that the NCAA labeled as a "poor decision" as the information was only to be privy to AD, CD, and president. least that's what i'm gathering . . .

Perhaps this little "distraction" might help to explain our poor performance last year. I can hear it now: Al Groh named interim head coach"clap

he's got some explaining to do, that's for sure! the AD and CD were specifically told not to share info. now, did D-rad talk to CPJ in an effort to use a 3rd party to inform the player? or, was he genuinely trying to use the player-coach relationship to get to the bottom of the situation? either way, he was wrong to go against investigators wishes. obviously, the NCAA was still gonna find us in violation, IMO. but, maybe levy less probation time? i don't know.

  • Fire Paul Johnson!

If GT football doesn't win at least 8 games with a victory over UGA next year, we need to start considering the post-Paul Johnson era.

Looks like the NCAA is pissed at DRad mostly.

I wonder if hewitt's termination contract has a clause that could stop buyout $ if his bball program was found to violate NCAA rules. Anybody got a link to it?

dude, seriously??? come on . . . have you even bothered to read the report? obviously you haven't.

this ball was dropped by our compliance director, general counsel, the AD, and i guess you'd have to include the president since he was aware of the investigation. CPJ didn't create this problem nor did he knowingly involve himself in this issue in an order to stall or send the NCAA on some kinda goose chase. absolutely NO evidence of such in the report.

having said that, once they realized the internal investigation wasn't handled as it should have been, they revamped the compliance department and brought in more seasoned folks.

    Chill out, it's a joke.

  • Can someone help me understand something regarding the basketball violations noted in the NCAA report? Apparently we got dinged for this tournament held at the CRC for both 2009 and 2010. The tournament was in May both years. The report says on October 29, 2009:

"the NCAA Division I Board of Directors adopted a staggered implementation plan to address recruiting issues in Division I men's basketball. Included in these actions was an interpretation of NCAA Bylaws 13.15.1 and 13.11.1 relating to the conduct of nonscholastic events involving men's basketball prospective student-athletes conducted on Division I campuses, such as in this case. The interpretation, effective October 29, 2009, specified that a violation would occur if a men's basketball staff member or a representative of the institution's athletics interests was involved in any way in the operation or planning of a men's basketball nonscholastic event on its campus. Violations of the interpretations adopted by the Board of Directors in these actions were and are automatic violations of NCAA recruiting rules."

How do we get penalized for something we did that we had done for the previous eight years and was not "illegal" until five months after it occurred? Am I missing something?

there's a hint of truth in his joke, YW. he started out on page one saying paul johnson wasn't the "perfect" man we thought he was with absolutely no proof he had anything do to with this. but, i guarantee you IF paul johnson was highly implicated in this report he'd be posting "i told you so . . ." for all to read.

yep. you can tell by the look on both of their faces they're seriously bummed about this. these are men of integrity who are forced to admit mistakes have been made.

think about it, you've got THE biggest game of the season coming up versus the mutts and you have a handful of days to figure out if allegations of a star player receiving $312 of clothing from someone he says is his cousin is legal? the attorney told them yes. obviously, the NCAA felt otherwise.

D-rad was wrong to talk to CPJ. he admitted he should have discussed this with the NCAA first. but, he also said nothing he discussed with johnson would have hindered the investigation. of course, you just have to take him at his word on this.

That is a shame. He is a good man. Lets remember, he hasn't been an AD that long either.
Also, I read where Tech was informed by the NCAA that both guys were perfectly eligible to play in the last 3 games. It was EARNED. Fair and square.

The NCAA has just made itself look pathetic. Again. Spending how much time on what was a once time thing involving less than 400 bucks of "stuff?" that they cannot prove has anything to do with an agent. I bet the 100k pays for their waste of time investigation.

Meanwhile, grayshirting goes on everywhere as does oversigning.
The criminal element on football rosters is getting worse every year.
    Officiating is just awful.
NCAA standards for football players' entrance into college is obscenely low.
The two teams in the National Title Game last year are as crooked as the Mississippi River.
Academic cheating scandals receive little punishment.
Transfer rules for players are nuts.
    And so on.

I think PJ should wear his ACC ring in public from now on, as a sort of F-you to the NCAA.

Thanks Stone. Those who want CPJ gone. Who would you suggest we hire in his place. This man has done as much with Tech's program as anyone. I have faith that he will continue to do a great job with what he can recruit and maintain at Tech.

I honestly don't know who we would get. This all came out of left field to me. I wake up yesterday and all the sudden we're getting hammered by the NCAA.

As one who isn't sold on Paul Johnson, I hope it doesn't turn into Chan 2.0. There are some warning signs, but hopefully he can overcome them and get us where we need to be.

of course, CPJ ain't going nowhere. but, i'll play the guessing game . . .

one guess--jeff monken from GA southern. look what monk did in his first year in the 'boro. only resurrected the program back to nat'l status with ONE player who was versed in the offense. he's just a season removed from tech and is a helluva competitor. i found that out last year.

oh, and he had jaybo running outta the ski-gun formation TONS during the spring game! for those looking for the added shotgun wrinkle, there you go.

well, all offensive recruiting is towards building an option offense. we don't wanna go through three years of reloading, do we? besides, this offense CAN move the ball. it's proven itself. a lot of pressure has been put on the O because our D lacked so much. hopefully, we're starting to turn the corner on the D.

also, monken is a little more open with his interpretation of running the option. half of southern's plays in the spring game were run out from under center. it's not a tremendous leap moving out from under center to the ski-gun. easier to do. i'd LOVE to see vad lee in the ski-gun with this offense!

  • The same offense that was 1st, 1st, and 2nd in the ACC in total offense? Yeah- I'll take that.

GT Guy, I'm talking about the offense that was 6th in the ACC in scoring offense-the only thing that really matters-in 2008 and 2010.

Yes, we should keep running this offense. The 3-0 has made us unique and put us back on the national stage some what. If we run a pro-style offense we move back to mediocracy. It that what you want srschirm or any other CPJ haters. Come on... even with this NCAA infraction i heard something for the first time on ESPN, they said "a major athletic program just was handed a stiff ruling by the NCAA". They were talking about us. I think its a win to be considered a major athletic program, since in your eye we are just above Duke for National recognition. eh another rambling, but this whole thing has me on the edge.

With two more 6-6 years he'll be in O'Leary and Gailey territiory as far as wins and losses. When Radakovich leaves and a mystery man takes over as Athletic Director, what is the over/under on how long Paul Johnson would hang around? Hell, he might step down on his own. When the Len Bias cocaine scandal rocked Maryland, Coach Ross was completely clean, but he bailed because he knew the firestorm that was headed to College Park. Johnson may want to do the same. Sad as it may sound, it might be time for him to disassociate himself from our "rouge program".

Also, does anybody know whether we can, or cannot compete for the division and conference championships now? And if we won, are we BCS Bowl eligible.
